Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition in which patches of skin are darker in color than the surrounding skin tissue. Freckles, sun spots, melasma, and other darkened skin patches caused mainly by sun exposure or aging are all examples of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs where there is an excess of melanin, which is the body’s pigment that produces natural skin coloring. It is usually harmless, but many people are bothered by its appearance and seek treatment to achieve a more even skin tone. Hyperpigmentation can affect virtually all races of people.
Causes of Hyperpigmentation
Excessive Sun Damage: Sun exposure can cause age or liver spots. These are usually found on the hands and face. Overexposure to the sun can also darken freckles or other skin patches because the excess melanin absorbs the energy to protect the skin from overexposure. Broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays is essential protection against hyperpigmentation, as a single day of excess sun can undo months of treatment.
Acne: Acne can leave dark spots after the condition clears, leaving long-lasting or permanent discoloration of the skin.
Injuries or Scars: Scars or injuries can lead to discoloration of the skin. Scars that heal poorly after an injury or surgery can become more pronounced in texture and color.
Genetics: Hyperpigmentation can also be inherited. An example is freckles on the face, arms, and other areas of the body.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal changes can trigger melasma or chloasma (larger areas of darkened skin). For example, pregnancy can trigger the overproduction of melanin, resulting in the “mask of pregnancy” on the face and other areas. Birth control pills can also lead to hyperpigmentation.
